Damien Jurado's Postcards and Audio Letters: At the Airport, Waking Dawn, "Hi Dawn, this is Phil."
Tracks 5, 6, and 7 in reverse order, plus more voice memos with Damien about the album
I’m putting the Dawn & Phil tracks in reverse order from the original album, taking liberties to accentuate something Damien Jurado said recently when talking about Phil. He doesn’t imagine it worked out well for the guy. I hadn’t heard that so clearly back when we made the album, but I certainly hear it now. Listen to Dawn & Phil below. For paid subscribers, Damien and I trade more voice memos about the project. 🖤AV

Voice memos with Damien about the album. You can hear more at the end of Angel 1972, and Christmas 1983.

i don't find Phil boring. i think he's the guy everyone in the office discounts but in actuality he lives a complex and fluid life and commits the occasional crime that he then repents for until the urges become too strong and in order to throw people off his track he cleans his brutalist apartment obsessively and uses phrases like "about to hit the plane" and "it was just a very low-key connection that was very substantial."
when he says the flight was uneventful and the connections went smoothly and the luggage ended up in the same location he did, it's because he knew he shouldn't tell dawn that he spent the flights and connections in a high-energy stress about the possible detection of the human colostrum he was smuggling in his bag to sell in a Planet Fitness parking lot in Midtown Atlanta. he wants to respect her boundaries, that's why he mentioned them -- he hears and sees her -- he's just not capable of controlling his impulses.
the reason it doesn't work out well for phil is that dawn ends it after discovering he stole her entire storage of colostrum from when she gave birth to britney.
